I worked in a jewelry store the summer after I graduated from high school. I spent the days wiping down the glass jewelry cases, dusting all the gift items, and learning to engrave items like money clips and cigarette lighters, silver trays and baby cups. It was an old family owned store that carried tons of stuff … I remember buying my mom the prettiest crystal box for her birthday in June. Little did I know it was a cigarette box. When you flipped the lid over, it made a little ashtray. I felt so silly. I don’t know what happened to that little box.
When the summer ended, a position opened up for me at a local pharmacy. Better hours and a little more challenging than the jewelry store. I worked behind the counter, typing prescription labels and keeping track of drug inventory. I think they require you to have a certification to do that nowadays.
I just answered this Featured Question, you can answer it too!
Yeah…they do require certification, but that may or may not mean much!
I was a bus-girl at a Mexican restaraunt. Actually, it was a fun job! There was however, a caste-system, with the bussers and dishwashers at the bottom, followed by the waitresses, then the bartenders and cooks, then the hostesses and finally the owners. You didn’t ever cross those lines! I knew my place, knew I was dirt…and had a great time. Best soft-tacos in Michigan! –Laura

Been out and about and just got back to read: My first job was working at a Thom McAnn’s shoestore. I was hired at 15 and 8 months…couldn’t even drive myself. It was fun…I had my own $$$ and I wasn’t babysitting! I really liked sales..I am a people person and you meet the most interesting folk. (but you also meet the most interesting feet…yikes!) Easter was the busiest time of the year!! All in all it was a great experience. Thanks for asking!

If you are a pharmacy tech in training, you don’t have to be certified. Bethany was doing that for a while when she worked at CVS. But her “real job” was the photo lab at CVS. She is studying now to get her pharmacy tech certification.
My first job was at Houston Lighting and Power. Wait….that was my only job. At least my only paying job. I was there about 10 years before I quit to stay home and raise kids.
