A Father/Daughter Talk

A young woman was about to finish her second year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat and was in favor of distribution of wealth.

She felt deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, which she expressed openly. One day she was challenging her father on his beliefs and his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the addition of more government welfare programs. Based on the lectures she had participated in and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that for years her father had obviously harbored an evil, even selfish, desire to keep what he thought should be his.

The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she said so to her father. He stopped her and asked her how she was doing in school. She answered that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was hard to maintain. She studied all the time, never had time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn’t even have time for a boyfriend and didn’t really have many college friends because of spending all her time studying because she was also taking a more difficult curriculum.

Her father listened and then asked, “How is your friend Mary doing?”

She replied, “Mary is barely getting by. She has a 2.0 GPA, and all she takes are easy classes and never studies.” “College for her is a lot more fun; she goes to all the parties and sometimes doesn’t even show up for classes because she’s too hung over.”

Her father then asked his daughter, “Why don’t you go to the Dean’s office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your 4.0 GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.”

The daughter was shocked by her father’s suggestion and fired back, “That wouldn’t be fair! I worked really hard for my grades. Mary has done little or nothing and played while I worked!”

The father slowly smiled, winked and said, “Welcome to the Republican Party.”

  1. I would have given up the point if the Dean allowed it and my friend said she wanted it, except that’s not the way the real world works.
Then again, I guess the comparison doesn’t hold up because you can’t buy food with grades.
But I suppose I could let my friend eat my extra self-righteousness.  I wonder if I’d have enough to live off of though.  Tell me, would all the self-righteousness you’ve got be enough to feed someone?

  2. Notice.  The attack is that Republicans somehow steal food from the non-Republicans.  Typical Socialist elitism.  Not only does this patronize poor people and suggest that they NEED help feeding their own, because surely they can’t do it on their own, but it actually puts the *blame* on Republicans (not all of whom are rich, mind you) because we believe one should keep what they earn.
    So sad.

  3. Too funny!  I know.  It’s so easy to look at the world and all its inhabitants in an idealistic, judgmental way when you’re still wet behind the ears.  19 is awfully young to understand these matters, and on top of that, there’s a good chance his parents dropped the ball and didn’t teach him a good old fashioned work ethic . . .

  4. hahahahahaha
19 IS awfully young to understand THOSE matters.  BUT, 19 year-olds are expected to be knowledgable enough to make a choice to kill, die, and come back from a war and integrate back into society, all for the good of…the world?  Their country?  Their mothers?  Why are we fighting this war?
You’re probably right though.  I’m still a young dumb kid who hasn’t realized the Christian value in selling out or buying in for this wonderful capitalist state where we grip our money so tightly that it multiplies.  Please, tell me the one again about how material things will make me happy!  Or the lesson about holding on to what I’ve “earned” so that I can bring Jesus’s satisfaction on my sons and I forevermore.  Those are in the Bible somewhere!  Right next to the part about war being okay, I think.
Socialist elitism?  Re-read that, friend.  If it still makes sense on a closer perusal, then maybe you need to buy a dictionary that wasn’t written by Joseph McCarthy.
I bet it’s so wonderfully easy to pretend I’m crazy for wanting to give everything that I can’t use and don’t need away to people who might actually need it.  Perhaps it’s “inefficient.”  Maybe it’s “wasteful.”  Or maybe I should just try harder to look away when I pass a homeless person, because I’m sure it’s his fault he’s scizophrenic and has no family.
    I love you.  Peace.

  5. A) I’m not your friend, pinko.  Keep your peace pipe.  Jesus loves me.  That’s all I need.
    B) I don’t remember reading or writing anywhere here that money and things bring you happiness.  But of course, being the youngin’ you are, you’ve bought into the entire leftist, VOTE OR DIE, propaganda machine that claims all Christians are Republicans, are rich white suburbanites from the Midwest, are greedy and don’t give to charity.
I’ve probably given more to charity this year than you’ve PRODUCED in your lifetime.  That doesn’t include time donated working or serving the community, families in need, or visiting inmates in jail.  Yeah, Republicans and Christians do try to minister to people every now and then.
    C) War?  Do I remember reading anything about war in the above joke?  Nope.  But again, you’ve already decided that we’re all a bunch of warmongers who like sending men and women into harm’s way in order to protect the whole.  That we derive some pleasure from it.
    D) You are a Socialist, no?  You believe the rich, for some reason, don’t deserve what they have and that the poor deserve it more.  You believe wealth should be redistributed based on “need”, and not because one earned or inherited it, correct?  And your attitude about those who oppose your opinion or voice opposition against it is that they are either dumb, ill-informed, simple, or uneducated, is it not?  Rather Elitist, don’t you think?
    E) Just browsing your own Xanga, I’m curious – if women are the only ones who should be allowed to vote on abortion, and the young soldiers are the only ones who should be allowed to vote for war – by the same logic, doesn’t that necessarily mean those with the most money should only be allowed to vote on whether they get taxed or not?

  6. You completely didn’t respond to anything I said.  I don’t know where I presumed to be elitist, I merely suggested you stop passing judgement on the poor.  This is something Jesus supported.
As for War, which you chose to basically ignore, did Jesus somehow imply to you that war was okay in some situations?  I didn’t know the Prince of Peace supported violence against ANY groups in ANY situation.  I missed that passage, please point it out to me.
I never said anyone is dumb.  I said she’s self-righteous, which she is.  If you can judge how much someone has “earned,” then you must be god himself, because that’s the only one who could ever make such a deicision.  OR, You’re being a judgemental and self-righteous human being.
PLUS, you assume I agree with anything in MTV, the democratic party, or the socialist ideals, when I gave you no indication of that at all.  I’m just setting the record straight on your judgements.  Which are, for the record, wrong.  I said merely, that I would choose to give my grades up, as well as material possessions, perhaps because that’s what Jesus taught?  No, you didn’t leap to that conclusion.  Also, the nice little “joke” I commented on refers to the Republican Party.  I wasn’t trying to make any association of any sort, in fact, for all you know maybe I’m making a statement about my religious beliefs?  Nope, you didn’t think that.
I NEVER said I’m a socialist.  I’m not going to judge whether someone has earned their “rewards” or not.  But if you’d like my opinion, yes, I think that a miner who dies at 55 of black lung, because he worked 16 hour days every day but Sunday, deserves 100 billion dollars alot more than Bill Gates deserves it for stealing as much as he could as fast as he could.  I may be wrong, but that’s my opinion.  If that makes me a socialist, then I guess Jesus was a socialist.
If you’ve got a womb, it’s your business.  If you’re life is on the line, it’s your business.  If you’ve got money (yes, ANY money) then it’s your business.  Sure.  And if you don’t have money then you’re automatically not taxed, then alright.  I’m all for that.  Even though I don’t know how that’s analagous to anything in an article that I felt expressed the proper amount of anger at the staggering hatred involved in stealing humanity away from other people.  And yes, “faggots” are people too.  Jesus loves them too.  Muhammad too, for that matter.  And Buddha.  And Moses, I suppose.
I’ve clearly bought into the VOTE OR DIE propaganda machine because I would like to see MTV taken off the air.  I’m pretty sure that’s what the slogan was about right?  Oh man, did I get it wrong again?
So I guess I need you older and more wizened folks to inform me why I shouldn’t try and be a friend to someone I’m trying to have discourse with.  I also need to know why I should buy a big house and pay as little taxes as possible.  Oh yeah, and how to judge people like Jesus would want me to do.  I’m so young and naive.  Please show me the way?

  7. I didn’t realize that this was an election debate format and that I was obliged to respond to each of your ridiculous points and questions.  Well sorry, I’m going to not do it again.
You obviously don’t know the Jesus of the Bible, but I don’t have the desire to school mockers and scoffers (Psalm 1).  And who’s passing judgment on the poor here?!?  The whole point of this thread / joke was to point out that Socialists (and no, Christ wasn’t a Socialist.  It’s humorous that you actually believe that.  I’m not claiming He is a Republican, but He’s definitely not a Socialist.) believe the rich are evil because they have so much and the poor “deserve” what the rich have because they work “harder”.
Republicans tend to lean on traditional, Colonial and Biblical values of you work hard AND SMART, earn your own keep, pull yourself up from the bootstraps, and reap what you sow.  We celebrate people who overcame adversity, poverty, and physical limitations – people who refused to throw in the towel and say “I can’t do it.  I’m weak.”  We marvel at the human spirit and determination to better ourselves against all the odds.  Socialists and liberals believe it’s just too hard to expect someone to make it on their own because of X, Y, and Z.  Their litany of excuses and exceptions to the rules we all pay by belittle the human spirit we all cherish and strive to exalt.  We also have faith that inevitably, God provides.  We can do all we can, but in the end, it’s not our brains or physique or degrees or negotiating skills that make us money – but it’s God’s blessing our labor.
Only God can judge how much someone has earned?!?  Now you’re really stretching.  Is this some new liberal math?  Or are you making the enormous secular leap that somehow one’s worth is judged by their bank account balance?  I don’t know about you, but I think it’s pretty simple to judge how much someone has earned.  Look at their paycheck.  If I worked 10 hours this week and my paycheck shows $1000 before taxes, then I earned $1000.  I don’t understand where you are getting lost.  No one said anything here about what someone is *worth* based on their possessions or status.
Wake up, kid.  Chances are when you are ready to enter the real world, you’d gladly accept a big fat paycheck from Bill Gates who employs thousands of families and puts dinner on the table for millions of people globally and gives more to charity than some countries’ entire annual GNP.  You can live in fantasy land with your coal miner for now.  When you are ready to come back to reality, Microsoft or Dell or AiG or Ford any other Fortune 500 company will be happy to put you in a cubical.
Finally, you could learn a thing or two about honor and respect for one’s elders.  You obviously lack both.  Only a spineless, gutless liberal hiding behind the veil of internet anonymity would attack an older woman and a mother.  What is it with liberals that feel the need to comb the web for conservative forums and make noise?  Who’s being self-righteous?!?  I don’t remember TXMom2Jami asking for your opinion or critique of the joke posted, yet you feel the need to turn it into a personal attack.  I don’t know TXMom2Jami, personally, but I do know that her heart is sweet and that she’s a loving mother and wife and she loves our country and our God.  I’ll be 6 feet under before I stand by and watch some young thug take cowardly pot shots at a mother.  There was a time when men, real men, had an understanding that mothers are to be honored.  But I guess it’s all a joke to you and the young liberals today.
I consider one’s own website / Blog to be like one’s home.  No one asked you to come visit.  No one’s forcing you to agree with our beliefs.  No one even asked for >your< opinion.  But you feel the need to barge into someone’s home and set them straight?!?!  The liberal thug mentality is that for some reason, it’s their duty to spread liberalism and socialist propaganda to people who don’t care to hear it just to feel good about themselves.

  8. Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot the internet was PRIVATE.  There’s a couple little buttons that activate protected and privacy, but I guess they don’t work.  The very first thing I would do if I wanted my thoughts to be private would be to put them on the internet.  What world am I living in?  I’m living in the real world.  I live in a world where if you put something on the internet, you better EXPECT a response.
I do have a deep respect for my elders, but only the ones who earn my respect.  I vote, I pay taxes, and by god, if there’s a draft, I’ll be called up, so I think my political, religious, and pretty much any opinion is just as valid as yours, even if it’s equally as flawed.  I don’t believe I know the absolute right way to do things, but I sure do know that continuing to do what my ancestors did is not going to give me results different from what my ancestors achieved.  If you want to believe that the United States is, and has always been equal, then that’s your deluded business, but don’t presume to talk to me about the world of Middle Class White Christian Men.  I was born into that world, and it won’t take 15 more years to understand it.  I get it right now.
If you want to talk about respect, here’s a scenario for you:  I mock state-given charity, and then claim to abhor mocking.  I dismiss the opinion of someone younger than me based merely on the fact they’re younger then I am, and not only that, but I can’t have a sense of humor about it.  I think that last part’s the worst part.   If you’re going to make a joke, then you shouldn’t be surprised when someone makes a joke out of you.
    Laura,
Out of respect, you’ve overstepped your comfort level if you can’t handle this.  If you don’t want people reading your thoughts, then don’t put them on the internet.  Welcome to the year 2004 FRIENDS.

  9. So, we are agreed then.  You are a thug, a Nazi Socialist, and you believe it’s your duty to attack women in their home because you have a different point of view.  You believe the fact that this is a public forum gives you license to attack a mother.  All in good fun, of course.  It never occurred to you that some people use the internet to seek out other people with similar tastes and beliefs and have no desire to engage ranting bleeding hearts.  Yes, there is a mechanism to block out the unruly; it’s sad that you assume because that mechanism is available, then you are free to assault whomever you please until they reach a point where they have to do so.  It’s also arrogant beyond compare that you feel it’s your call to decide when someone is too comfortable or not – your Nazism extends to telling someone not to write their opinions on the internet unless they are ready to fight off the opposition.

  10. Wait, Nazis search people out in PUBLIC places in order to have discourse with them?  Silly me, I thought they were the ones who looked for people who agreed with them, or killed people who didn’t.  I forgot that free and open discussion was a part of fascist propaganda.  My parents probably forgot to teach me that along with my “work ethic.”
And she’s a mother so that means you can’t inflict violence on her?  So it’s alright to attack fathers?  Men?  Are you making some kind of sexist statement?  I don’t know about your mother, but my mom can certainly take criticism from anyone, ESPECIALLY in her home.  Even though we’re talking ON THE INTERNET (I can’t stress that enough), which is a PUBLIC medium of COMMUNICATION.  If I said something that was unintentionally hurtful, and not though-provoking as I had intended, then I would expect her to say, “Excuse me, sir (or young whippersnapper/bleeding heart/communist pinko/neo-fascist or whatever you crazy kids are calling it nowadays), that was hurtful, and I don’t appreciate it.”  In which case, I would have said, “I’m sorry ma’am, but I didn’t much care for your little ‘joke,’ much either.  I was merely stating that perhaps if accruing wealth is what the Republican Party is about (whether you’ve earned it or not), then perhaps I should get on the phone and tell the Christian Right to reconsider voting predominantly Republican.  I don’t feel the need to go leaping into quotation of scripture, but I can see pretty clearly that Jesus was deeply against material things, which would include money.”
I didn’t think any “attack” I made could be construed as especially vicious in any way, shape, or form, and above all it was most certainly geared towards discussion, which has most certainly done.  I was simply stating that I can’t find any place in the new testament that tells me to hold on to my money for any reason.  IN fact, the new testament seems to tell me something quite opposite.  But perhaps I was trying to force my view a little too strongly.  It doesn’t matter that my views could be peace, love, or understanding, because I’m surely assaulting her by trying to draw her attention to something in a way that she’s not familiar with.
Of course, I feel kind of ridiculous responding to this fascist comparison when it comes from a person who supports a party that makes people sign loyalty oaths before attending campaign rallies.  But I’ll just chalk that up to another thing my hippy/baby-eating/French-loving/communist/fascist mommy and daddy taught me.

  11. Wait.  This is too good to be true.  It’s sexist to stand up for a woman and mother?  How about children?  Or would I be discriminating against the mature?  How about the invalid?  Or would I be showing favoritism for the able-bodied?
Time to go to school.  Crack open that New Testament again (or for once).  Look up the Parable of the Ten Talents.  Matthew 25.  Hmmm.  Who was the master’s rebuke for?  Was it the one who made the most money on his master’s investment?  Nope.  In fact, he was rewarded with more.  It’s the one who returned NOTHING on his master’s investment that was thrown out.
Then look up the Parable of the Vineyard workers.  Matthew 20.  Did Jesus say the workers who worked ‘hardest’ and longest should get more?  Nope.  Did Jesus say that those who didn’t work should get paid?  Certainly not.
Oh let’s see what else can I find in that big old book.  Paul writes in 2 Thessalonians 3:10.  I like this one because it’s so simple.  You don’t work; you don’t eat.
Oh what the heck.  Let’s even throw in some Old Testament.  Nehemiah 4:12-14
Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”   Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows.  After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
Like I wrote earlier, you obviously have no honor.  It’s wasted on you to debate it because the concept is so far out of your grasp.
The fact is that arguing with you is a joke.  You are miles out of your league.  I take no pleasure in it because it’s like me picking on my 3 year old.

  12. WOW!  I had no idea when I posted the little funny that my DEMOCRAT friend sent me that it would provoke such a firestorm.  Yes, my best friend since 7th grade sent me that little ha-ha and she only recently voted Republican because she’s disgusted with the litigation abuses of the likes of John Edwards, et al.  (As we all know, the greedy legal abuses of ambulance chasers drive up the costs of goods and services for everyone, thus depriving us all of goods and services that are perfectly safe because companies are afraid to similar lawsuits.)
Darkstar218, you can post anything you want on my website anytime.  You are my hero!  Your wife is a blessed woman, and your child(ren), too!
Before I got to your comment regarding the parable of the 10 talents, I was thinking, “has this kid ever heard the parable of the 10 talents?” and then, boom!  You said it for me!  Another that came to mind was the scripture that says (and forgive me for not knowing chapter and verse off the top of my head) that the man who does not provide for his family is worse than the infidel.  To me, this means that you do whatever you have to in order to provide for your family.  So you were a computer geek that got laid off . . . and you can’t find a job computer geeking?  Dig ditches, flip burgers, re-train for something different.
My husband is an educator — he has almost 20 years of teaching in the public schools and the prison system under his belt.  For a short period of time he was unemployed.  He couldn’t find a job teaching.  Do you know what he did?  He went to work for a car dealership.  Yes, he was a car salesman.  No, he didn’t wear the plaid pants, and he always dealt with potential customers ethically.  But to go from academia to selling cars — it was very difficult for him.
But he did it rather than take a handout from the government.  During that time, he also helped a friend with a construction business bust up old tile in a school (with a jackhammer) and lay the new tile.  The friend’s wife stopped by the job site to bring them lunch and she was seriously worried about my husband.  It was physically demanding work for someone used to teaching and when he got home he was exhausted and had blisters all over his hands.  But he did it.
We’re not wealthy people dollar-wise.  But we are conservative Republicans because the wealth of freedom is more than enough for us.  To choose the liberal path would mean having the government control our lives in every aspect and it’s too great a price to pay considering the sacrifices of those who’ve come before us to give us the gift of freedom.
I’m not afraid of people like Yourmagicalgoat (what kind of name is that?) and their comments.  It would be convenient to block their comments, but then I would be stealing the very freedom of speech from them that I value with my very being.  So post away, liberals — we may read your comments, or we may exercise our freedom to ignore them.  But we will not ever deny you the right to post them.  :0)

  13. I was actually wondering when the Republican would bring up that old perennial favorite of the rich (or wannabe rich), the ten talents story.  Again, go ahead and defend women in children, just not in Iraq (Or maybe where their god isn’t your god?).  Once more, I never called anyone a name, and was basically attacked for expressing my opinion in a public place.
If this amounts to an attack on, well, anyone, then please begin shouting names at the next Jehovah’s Witness, or Baptist that comes to your door.  Because that’s an attack on my opinions, IN MY HOME.
I’m miles out of my league, eh?  Again, I don’t know what Bible you’re “reading,” but I’m sure you take it all very literally.  So let’s sum up the ten talents story, in all its literal glory. If you make more money, you’re a more valuable human being to Christ.  Yeah, that about sounds like the same guy who had his worst moment of anger with moneychangers in the temple (they were just investment bankers, what were they doing wrong?  Hmm…I wonder), or repeatedly told people to give all their worldly possessions away.  And, oh yeah!  To actually be an Apostle, you had to give up any claim to a real job in order to follow him around and beg.  Whatever Paul said to the Thessalonians is not a word out of Jesus’s mouth.
Oh no!  It appears Jesus was one of those free-loading moochers who just wants to live off of handouts(kinda like your local priest/pastor)!  For shame!  I suppose you’ll have to go find some other religion now, right?  No, of course not, because Jesus forgives you, right?  Even when you do the exact opposite of what he did, and explicity told people to do (not in parable, I might add).  And not for nothing, if you’ve ever been tempted to call your three year old a socialist Nazi, then I’m volunteering right now to pay for his psychological bills.  Oh drat, you don’t allow handouts either.
Since even the devil can quote scripture for his own ends, I won’t even bother giving you the books, but since I’m so “out of my league” I’m sure you know it much better than I do.  Even though you’re a banker (hmm…kinda like the moneychangers?), and for all you know, I’ve been a student in a seminary for the past two years.
And thanks for your “generosity” ma’am.  It’s such a “sacrifice” to “grant” me free-speech in a public place.  I’m sure Jesus will look on you kindly.

  14. Just for the record, you completely misunderstood the talent.  It’s about taking risk and sharing the goods you have, not about sitting on what you’ve got.  If you actually think it’s about money, then I feel really bad for you.

  15. It’s hilarious.  The more you type, the more you dig your own grave.  What’s more is even if I didn’t know your age, I could tell just from reading your words that you are an immature dreamer not living in reality.  It’s not to say, necessarily, that physical age equates wisdom.  My 5 year old is probably wiser and more mature than you are.  It’s almost too easy now.  Like I said, there’s no fun in beating up on an invalid.  I have deeper conversations with my 3 year old than I do with you.
How do I know you aren’t a seminarian?  Well actually I’m 99.99% sure you are not.  (The 0.01% of uncertainty I chalk up to the fact that one could be enrolled in seminary and never show up to class or read a book.)  Gasp!  How could I know?!?  Because unless you are going to the John Kerry / Al Gore School of “Let’s Play Christian When I Want to Win Over Christian Votes” and don’t know the difference between John 3:16 and John 16:3 (my favorite Gore blunder, btw.  Look it up, Laura.  It’s hilarious and God’s providence that he made the misquote.)  — I KNOW you don’t know squat about the Bible or Jesus.
How arrogant of me!  How could I know that?!?
Actually, Christ gave me (yep, gave ME directly) the tools to pick you out of the crowd by your own fruit.  Your words and your beliefs make you stand out like a heap of dung in an all white room.
Well, let’s go back to the old Bible again then, shall we.  Don’t like Paul or the OT?  (btw, THAT right there is a tell-tale sign)  Well then, let’s get it from the master Himself.

    John 14:23-24
Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.  He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
    Matthew 7:15-23
“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.  By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?  Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.  A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.  Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.  Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’  Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
    Matthew 5:17-20
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.  Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Seems to me like Christ takes the Scriptures seriously.

    About the Talents.
“It’s about taking risk and sharing the goods you have, not about sitting on what you’ve got.”
     – Now your ignorance is just plain for all to see. –
Exactly what are you basing your theory on?  Certainly not Scripture, because there’s nothing in Matthew 25 that sounds remotely close to what you say.  I never said the parable was a justification for hording money or that it was even ABOUT money.  But again, you don’t know Scripture or Christ, so I assumed you knew too much.
The point of the Parable was that each person was given a gift.  The master, Christ, wants to see what his servants will do with the gifts.  The first two servants worked hard.  vs 16 – “The man who had received the five talents went at once and PUT HIS MONEY TO WORK and gained five more.”  It is about our gifts.  If I’m given the gift of teaching, and I never teach anyone, then I’m like the third, wicked LAZY servant.  If I have can dig ditches or sell cars or serve food or trade stocks and bonds to provide for my family, but I’m too lazy to work – GUESS WHICH SERVANT I’M MOST LIKE?
It has NOTHING to do with the money.  It has everything to do with using your God given gifts for HIS glory and to do your job while here on earth.
Side note.  If Christ hates bankers, then why on earth does he tell the third servant to give his money to a banker to gain interest in this VERY parable?
vs 26-27 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, LAZY servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?  Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.”
Again, you completely missed the point of Jesus clearing the Temple.  It has nothing to do with bankers.
You also don’t take the Bible seriously, or at least you don’t believe it’s the complete, inerrant, inspired Word of God – even though Christ did.  I could already tell that before you wrote it.  What I find absolutely hysterical is that Christian-haters try to attack Christians with some loose, random bits and pieces of Scripture out of context (much like Satan did in tempting Christ – Matthew 4) and then when Christians defend and refute false doctrine or misinterpretations of Scriptural context – well, we’re mocked for actually BELIEVING Scripture is complete and God’s Word.  So if it’s faulty, why try to attack us on a Scriptural basis to begin with?  Nonsense.
The whole “their god isn’t my God” bit, again, shows clearly the fact that you don’t know Christ or the Bible.  Contrary to liberal theology, the Bible, Christ, the Prophets, the Apostles, and the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob don’t believe ALL ROADS LEAD TO HEAVEN and ALL GODS ARE THE SAME.
    Deuteronomy 6:14-15
“Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land.”
    And from the 10 Commandments
    Exodus 20:3-6
“You shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

  16. Uh, you do know that interest was illegal in Christ’s time right?  It was considered sinful to charge it right up until…well, the U.S. came into power really.
Christ didn’t hate anyone(nor did he insult anyone to their face who was doing nothing wrong), obviously, but even more obvious than that he was against the possession of material things.  I don’t know why you won’t quote those passages from the Bible, but again, I don’t feel the need to quote anything.  I really don’t need the Bible to tell me my ideas, it’s just a loose guide for some good thoughts.
But if you believe so much in ALL the scripture, then I beg the question, are you still kosher?  Did you circumsize your children?  Do you refuse to shave your beard and cut your hair like the Hassidim of the Old Testament?  I doubt it, because banks tend to have some sort of code prohibiting beards that long, or at least i’m led to believe so, becuase I’ve never seen anyone do that.  I know that after Jesus’s death the apostles decided that some Jewish law was not acceptable anymore, but how did they do that if Jesus explicitly told them not to?  And why do you follow those newer rules if Jesus explicitly told you to follow everything in the Old Testament?
And if I’m so “unknowledgable” shouldn’t you be trying to teach me peacably instead of insulting me REPEATEDLY?  Nah, I bet Christ is real happy how much anger you’re expressing to me.  I’m all ears my friend, please convince me that Christ didn’t want people to give until it hurt.
You can read the scripture all you like, and you can memorize it until the cows come home, but if you’re going not to try and understand a parable fully or realize that interpretations can differ, then I feel even worse for you.  If you’re going to continue judging based on a LITERAL translation of a book that is filled with massive leaps of faith (which is not necessarily a bad thing, and also it has some very inspiring ideas), then I feel worse.  And if you’re going to continue brow-beating me while I try to talk to you, you’re only going to reinforce other people’s negative feelings towards Christians.
Personally, i don’t hate Christians at all.  IN fact, I think Christ was a really nice guy who tried to help the people that nailed him to the cross.  But I don’t think Christ would ever, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE promote the judging of another human being, the gathering of material wealth, or the taking of another life UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.  And don’t tell me you believe this, because if you did there is no way you could support a war, judge me repeatedly, or insist that keeping as much money as possible is the right way to live.

  17. John Kerry supposedly is a confirmed Catholic.  That means nothing to me or God.  (see Matthew 7:15-23 above once again)  If you are banking your eternal salvation on some confession you made as a child, better look at the Bible once again.  If your Catholic doctrine teaches you to offer prayers to anyone other than God or Christ, then yes, you are an idolater by your own admission.  (See the 10 Commandments once again.)
    Here’s a question for you.
Is there any doubt from my words that I am a follower of Christ?  Can the same be said about you?  My bold claim would be that until you pronounced yourself a confirmed Catholic, no one would have known the better.  How much does that say for your faith?
“But I don’t think Christ would ever, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE promote the judging of another human being, the gathering of material wealth, or the taking of another life UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.”
That’s all well and good.  Sounds nice on a postcard.  What are you basing this on?  Your FEELINGS?  Mohammad?  Dante?  Buddha?
The Truth scares people.  It angers people.  In a moral relativistic society, it sounds hateful and judging.  People who believe in Biblical Truth are easy targets because what’s easier than claiming no one can KNOW anything?  Maybe water boils at zero degrees somewhere in time.  Maybe two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom make fruit juice in some other countries.  As for teaching you, you are obviously not interested in being taught.  You already have made up your mind.  You feel proud that you can take stabs at mothers and women in the name of “public domain”.  I was wondering today.  Do you also go and attack 11 year olds on their public web sites or 90 year olds?  You have no regard for honor or propriety.  So why would I waste my time on someone who has no desire to learn?  If you are serious about learning about Christ and the Bible, you had better first start with improving your approach.  If you aren’t interested, then by all means, keep spouting away.  I’m not going anywhere.

I do have serious doubts that you’re a follower of Christ.  I don’t think that you’d turn the other cheek to a person who struck you, and nor do I believe that you have the inner peace that would go with finding a true universal truth.  I’ve known good Buddhists, I’ve known good Christians, I’ve known good Atheists, and I’ve known some good Deists.  But you sir, you share no characteristics with any of those people except a heartbeat.  I hope your “truth” gives you the arbitrary power necessary to kill all the Jews, Muslims, and heathens, or convert them, or send them to hell, or whatever you want to do with them.  Good luck, but most of all, good luck to your children.

  22. I love homosexuals.  I don’t think I’m any better in God’s eyes than a homosexual (or a murder or a liar or a thief or a rapist).  ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)
If you are asking me if God condones homosexuality as a practice?  Look up Romans 1 in the NT.  The Bible teaches us that it is unnatural, unholy and an abomination in God’s sight.
Now before you go talking about so-called Christian mob groups that murder homosexuals or bomb abortion clinics or the like, understand the context of this sin in light of the rest of Scripture.  (btw, there are plenty of religious groups other than Christians and Catholics that still today kill practicing homosexuals.  Take your pick from the Middle Eastern religions.)
As I wrote above, am I better than a homosexual?  No.  Sin is sin.  Contrary to the Catholic church’s market economy of sins / penance where one sin equals X penance and another equals X+Y+Z . . . the Bible teaches clearly that one sin – JUST ONE – is enough to condemn you to hell.  James 2:10 – “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.”
Christ died for our sins.  He paid the price for liars, murderers, thieves, adulterers – and yes, homosexuals.  He did so freely.  He did so without anything I did to deserve salvation.  But you have to believe in Him and Biblical teaching (if you read Matthew 5:17-20 above).
The question is, knowing you’ve received salvation or believe in Christ, what then?  Can we truly say we believe in Christ and continue to sin with indifference?  Can we preach doctrine that is diametrically opposed to Biblical teaching and still claim to believe in Jesus?  Jesus and the prophets emphatically say NO.
Romans 6:1-2  “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?  Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”
Jude 1:3-4  ”Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.  For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.”
Jesus taught that we are all sinners.  However He also emphasized standing up for Biblical truth.  Just because we are sinners doesn’t remove the responsibility placed on believers to defend Biblical truth.  Another application of the Ten Talents parable is that Christians are the ones entrusted with the gift of the Gospel message.  For us to stand back and remain silent in the wake of false teachings or heresy would deem us Wicked and Lazy.

  23. I believe that the Constitution insures that the government shall not establish a State religion.  What that means is the government shall not force everyone to participate in one particular religion or another.  For instance, in most Muslim countries, you are forced to bow in prayer to Allah 5 times a day.  You have no choice in the matter.
What that does NOT mean is there must be a complete void of references to God, a Creator, or Moral truth in the law, politics, or government.  The Founding Fathers were predominantly Christians.  There are references to the God of the Bible throughout the fabric of our history and culture from as early as the Pilgrims and the Declaration of Independence.
It’s a fallacy to believe that one can separate one’s religious beliefs from one’s legislative beliefs.  John Kerry, for instance, has attacked the President constantly for even mentioning God or the Creator or the fact that he prays.  Kerry also claimed that though he believed in God and was a devout Catholic that somehow he could vote for and legislate things that were the antithesis of his supposed moral beliefs.  It also reminds me of so-called Christians who practice drunkenness and debauchery and promiscuity all weekend long and then think they’re alright because they go to church Sunday morning hung-over.
To most Christians or anyone with common sense, that’s totally inconsistent.  People must follow their convictions, religious or otherwise, in all aspects of their lives if they want to convince anyone they have any sort of integrity.

  24. Religious freedom has nothing to do with gay marriage.  The homosexuals are not practicing a religion when they are demanding marriage licenses.  They are selfishly demanding that the institution of marriage, which was founded and defined for thousands of years historically in the church, be radically redefined for a small group of outspoken of individuals.  It’s the religious equivalent of me forcing Jews to eat non-Kosher foods because I don’t believe pork should be excluded from the Kosher club.  Homosexuals are, in fact, attempting to force their opinions to override the overwhelming majority of opinions about what defines a marriage in this country – evidenced by the fact that 11 states banned same-sex marriages on Nov 2nd, not including the handful of states that already have same-sex marriage bans on the books.
The reality is that the gay-marriage agenda has no religious roots other than an anti-religious agenda.  It’s simply a tactic to force America to accept a behavior and lifestyle which the majority of American’s don’t embrace.  The fact is Republicans and Democrats both have voiced opinions about marriage being only between one man and one woman.  Where many of us differ is again, knowing that – what do we do about it?
Republicans and Christians are pushing the Constitutional Amendment because it is the only way to ensure that judges acting without jurisdiction or authority and simply side-stepping the legislative procedure are no longer able to continue.  These rogue judges are popping up all over the country.  Once Massachusetts fell under, other states were quick to follow.  Even the mayor of San Francisco decided to forgo the whole judicial process and issue STATE marriage licenses with a total disregard for the people of California and the legislative, executive or judicial branches of the State and Federal government.  New Orleans voters supported an overwhelming ban on gay-marriage – something like 80% of the voters.  But one judge simply decided to throw out the ban.  A Constitutional Amendment would close that loophole to these judges overnight.
Let me clarify one thing before I end this thought.
I am a Christian above all.  I love my country.  I’m proud to be an American.  I love my family.  I love my friends.  I even love the Republican party 90% of the time.  (yes, I do have some criticisms about some of the policies or practices.)  But I follow Christ first.  If my country or the Constitution or the Republican National Committee or my father or my best friend start to advocate things that I know are against my Christian beliefs – they will lose every time.  Nations will rise and fall.  Political parties will evolve or devolve.  Families will disperse and die off.  But the Word of God remains constant from the beginning to the end.

  26. What “yourmagicalgoat” doesn’t get (imho) is that those “legally recognized” religions willing to conduct the marriage ceremony for homosexuals have turned their backs on the Word of God because they “know better.”  What he doesn’t realize, or ignores, is that those “legally recognized” religions are also losing members in droves because they won’t be accomplices to what amounts to heresy, if they are true to their faith.
Denominations like the Presbyterian Church have grassroots movements within their ranks of members who pledge to follow the Bible as the literal Word of God and not just a “nice guidebook of good thoughts” (I think that’s how “yourmagicalgoat” referred to it in an earlier comment).  There are other denominations as well who feel the same.  My friend who sent me the controversial funny that started all this asked her Lutheran pastor what he thought about gay marriage.  He looked her straight in the eye and said, “It doesn’t matter what I think.  It’s what God thinks and He doesn’t like it.”
Pretty simple, huh?  And as far as gay marriages go, well — it’s a rare gay person that I’ve met that wants to marry because of some deep need for a spiritual bond.  Usually it has to do with insurance benefits, estate planning, hospital visitation, and tragically, children/custody issues.  And what’s really sad is that many of these “unions” rarely, rarely last.  And then there’s the pain and heartbreak of splitting everything up, and heaven forbid, if there are children involved . . .  So very, very sad.
There is so much peace and joy to be found in just following God’s Word . . . but we always think we can do it better (straight, gay, married, single) — we’re such obstinate creatures, mankind, and we think we know so much more than the Creator.  Unfortunately, all of us stumble from time to time and those who don’t believe in God, or don’t adhere to His teachings as literal, Holy Spirit inspired truth, jump on every misstep as proof of why we’re WRONG.  But for every misstep, God is there to catch us up, even if the way’s a little bumpy for a while, He is there to hold our hand and encourage us that this valley is small and soon we’ll be on the mountaintop!

  27. The Constitution is not made to enforce the will of the majority.  It’s made to protect the rights of the minority.  I didn’t ignore your point, because it’s a ridiculous point.  The majority of Americans didn’t believe in freeing the slaves or giving blacks equal rights, and in many many many cases people used religion and quoted scripture in order to make their case.  Now, however, no conservative would ever make such a ridiculous case about blacks.
In addition, last time I looked at the numbers, the Unitarian Church is growing, and they’re very willing to marry gay people.  I mean, I guess you’re welcome to call them a “religion” instead of a religion, but the U.S. government gives them the same non-profit status as your religion has.  And I do know that Mormons(they’re growing as a religion too) have a radical segment of members that practice polygamy.  But which U.S. recognized religion promotes bestiality and pedophelia?
If you’re a Unitarian that lives in a state where gay-marriage has been outlawed, then the State has decided it’s allowed to regulate something inside your religion.  That is against the first amendment.
I still don’t know why you believe the nation was founded on Christian beliefs.  The greatest of the founding fathers, Jefferson, Washington, and Ben Franklin did not belong to congregations.  Jefferson was a deist who believed in God because of natural evidence or logic, and he never attended a congregation.  IN fact, if you’re willing to read documents, the Treaty of Tripoli that was negotiated successfully says extremely explicitlly that the U.S. was not founded as a Christian nation.  You’re quite welcome to look it up, I mean, unless the treaty that ended the first major international conflict of the actual U.S. is a forgery, which I suppose is possible.  Even though it’s signed by John Adams himself.
You know what, I will quote the treaty, here’s the phrase, ”

As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion — as it has in itself no character of enmity [hatred] against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen [Muslims] — and as the said States [America] have never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. ”

Go look it up, here’s a website, you can google if you don’t trust me:

    http://www.ronaldbrucemeyer.com/rants/0610almanac.htm
James Madison, the FATHER OF THE CONSTITUTION, was also a deist.  Eyewitness testimony from the time-period will tell you that although the U.S. Constitution is filled with Christian sentiments, it’s also filled with Zoroastrian sentiments, and Unitarian sentmients, and Mormon sentiments.  This nation was founded on people fleeing religious persecution, not strictly Christians.

  28. Gosh, I spend one weekend with my family and look at all the fun I miss.
    Okay, about the Constitution.
I’m not a Constitutional professor or a lawyer, but I do know this much.  Our country was established on the framework of fundamental principles and values, many of which can be traced back to Christian origins.  I never said *all* of the Founding Fathers were Christians, nor did I insinuate that this is a CHRISTIAN only nation.  But what historical revisionists and liberals alike are trying to paint is a picture of Colonial America devoid of God or Faith in Christ in public life.  Thus, you see groups like the ACLU protesting “In God We Trust” on our currency, “One Nation Under God” in our pledge, or nativity scenes within a 1 mile radius of any public building.  Freedom of Religion, as I wrote earlier, is not a call for removal of all Religion from public life.
I’m not even going to get into the fallacy of the Unitarian “religion” (one that denies the existence of any God or anything unseen) or how morally bankrupt Mormonism is, but I will say this.  I don’t define a religion by whether or not the government grants an organization a 501c3, tax-exempt status.
“If you’re a Unitarian that lives in a state where gay-marriage has been outlawed, then the State has decided it’s allowed to regulate something inside your religion.  That is against the first amendment.”
Here’s the problem with your assertion.  If I’m reading it correctly, the 10th Amendment gives power to the State and the people to decide things not expressly under the control of the Federal Government.  Since marriage licenses are recognized as State issued, that leaves control in the hands of the people of the State to decide how to define it.  The problem, as I’ve stated, with judges deciding to force states to recognize gay marriages is that it completely ignores the 10th Amendment and the people’s rights.
The fact is, you are right that our government is not a simple majority rule operation.  We are not a Democracy, but a Republic.  I won’t get into why that’s important for this topic yet, but my reasons for pointing out “what the majority of people want . . .” was simply to show that there is a very real opposition in this country growing against gay marriage.  The repercussions of such are yet to be determined.  We’re not talking about a handful of radical farmland Christians.  It’s a battle that is far reaching and crosses all kinds of religious, political, or social lines.

  30. The fact is that the Catholic church changes Christian history whichever way the Pope feels the wind blows.  Bible believing, evangelical, Christians don’t.  You obviously don’t know the historicity or validity of the Bible, how we got the Bibles we have today, how LITTLE has changed in thousands of years, and how much evidence exists today that supports the claims that the Bible is inerrant and complete.  No, it’s not a story book passed on by word of mouth or a volume of Tall Tales.  Start with Josh McDowells’ The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict for more information.
A religion, as defined by Webster’s dictionary, is a manifestation of faithful devotion to an acknowledged ultimate reality or deity.  I will go on to add that a religion is any organized group of people with a common bond of devotion to one or many divine beings.  The problem with the Unitarian “religion” is that it disavows any existence of divine beings, God, a Creator, or pretty much anything unseen.  That’s not a religion.  That’s a country club of motivational speakers.

Here’s one thing that I’ll clue you into that most liberals can’t seem to grasp.  You seem to be under the impression that my goal in reading and writing on Blogs is to give the opposition equal time or coverage.  The liberal battle cry has always been “we can never be certain of anything!  Thus, we must keep our minds WIDE open for pretty much anything that comes our way.”  But that is not my goal.  An Open Mind – the state of nirvana for the Liberals – is an invitation for whoever has the slickest sales pitch to stake their turf in your heart.  You’re fooled into believing that there are no absolutes.  So you spend your life going around in circles because your conscience tells you what is right and what is wrong, but your brain tries to convince you otherwise.
I am certain of a great many things.  I write about them because I am so certain.  That may offend certain liberals – the fact that I claim to have the answers, but that’s their problem, not mine.  In fact, I’m certain about 99% of the things that are most important to me and my daily living.  The other things that I’m uncertain of, don’t really matter a hill of beans to me.  That’s not to say that I don’t strive to learn new things, but that also doesn’t mean that I have to start from scratch every time I pick up a new book of the month.
When it comes to reading and arguing with Liberals who *can’t* be absolutely certain about the most fundamental and basic human needs, then it’s no contest.  It’s like picking on a 3 year old again.  When you are not even certain about if there is a heaven or hell, does it make much difference if you can’t decide if this sect of Unitarianism believes in God, but not the God of the Bible, or if the money trail in the UN Food for Oil scandal can be traced into the hands of Palestinian terrorists or if global warming is increasing at 1 degree every 1,000 years or 1,500 years?  When you are not certain about your eternal destiny as I am, is it any surprise that no matter what I do or say, you will take offense or think I’m “not a nice person”?
Last tip of the day – NICE people don’t go to heaven for being NICE and MEAN people don’t go to hell for being MEAN.  Good luck to you.
